Solar maximum is here: why the aurora is reaching further south

If it feels like the northern lights have been showing up in the wrong places lately — over English villages, German cities, even the American South — you're not imagining it. The Sun is near the top of its eleven-year activity cycle, and Solar Cycle 25 has turned out to be noticeably livelier than the official forecasts expected. That single fact is behind almost every viral aurora photo of the past two years.

What solar maximum actually is

The Sun runs on a roughly eleven-year rhythm. At solar minimum its face is nearly blank; at solar maximum it is freckled with sunspots — cool, intensely magnetic regions where the Sun's tangled magnetic field breaks through the surface. Those spots are the launch pads for flares and for coronal mass ejections: billion-tonne clouds of magnetised plasma flung out into the solar system.

When one of those clouds sweeps past Earth, it rattles our magnetic field. That disturbance is what lights the aurora — charged particles funnelled down the field lines, slamming into oxygen and nitrogen high in the atmosphere and making them glow. More sunspots means more eruptions, which means more frequent and more intense geomagnetic storms. Solar maximum is simply the stretch of years when that machinery is running hottest.

Why this cycle is punching above its weight

For years, the consensus forecast pegged Cycle 25 as a modest one, similar to the weak cycle before it. Instead, monthly sunspot numbers have run well ahead of that prediction, and forecasters have since acknowledged the peak arrived earlier and higher than expected — in 2024 rather than 2025. A stronger peak means the auroral oval, the permanent ring of aurora centred on each magnetic pole, spends more time expanded toward the equator.

When a big storm hits, that oval balloons southward (and, in the southern hemisphere, northward). Under an ordinary Kp 3 night the lights hug the Arctic; under a severe storm they can be overhead at mid-latitudes that go years between displays. The May 2024 superstorm — the strongest in two decades — put the aurora over places like Florida, northern India and Queensland on the same night, and 2025 delivered several more strong rounds.

Why mid-latitudes are suddenly in play

Two things decide whether you see anything: how far the oval has pushed toward you, and where you sit on the geomagnetic map rather than the ordinary one. The oval is centred on the magnetic pole, not the geographic pole, so your magnetic latitude is what matters. That's why a strong storm favours North America and reaches deep into Europe, while the same Kp does far less for equivalent latitudes over the Pacific.

It also explains the flood of first-time sightings. During the biggest storms of this cycle the oval has reached magnetic latitudes that only light up a handful of nights per decade — so for millions of people, an aurora that has always been technically possible finally became actual. How long does the good run last?

Solar maximum is a plateau, not a spike. Activity doesn't collapse the moment the peak passes — the couple of years on the downslope often deliver some of a cycle's most memorable storms, because large, complex sunspot groups keep rotating across the face of the Sun. Practically, that means the strong aurora seasons of this cycle should keep coming through 2026 and into 2027 before the Sun gradually quiets toward the early 2030s minimum.

So this is the window. If chasing the lights from a mid-latitude home has been on your list, the next couple of winters are the best odds you'll get until the 2030s.
