Chasing the dark: why moonless nights are your best aurora bet
Aurora chasers spend endless energy watching the Sun, which is fair — it supplies the show. But the Sun is unpredictable more than a few days out, whereas the other thing that decides your night is perfectly predictable years ahead: the Moon. Learn to plan around moonlight and you tilt the odds in your favour every single month, no space-weather luck required.
Why moonlight matters so much
The aurora, especially at mid-latitudes, is often faint — a soft glow or pale arc rather than the vivid curtains you see in long-exposure photos. Faint light is easily overwhelmed by competing light, and a bright Moon is the biggest natural source of it. A full Moon sitting high in the sky floods the whole atmosphere with a silvery wash that raises the background brightness and drowns everything but the strongest displays.
It's the same reason astronomers plan deep-sky observing around the Moon. On a bright-moon night the Milky Way vanishes and only the brightest stars survive; a subtle green aurora fares no better. It's the one variable you can lock in with total confidence.
