How to read a Kp forecast (and why most alerts cry wolf)
Sooner or later every aurora chaser gets the notification: "Kp 7 — aurora likely tonight!" Half the recipients rush outside and see a plain, dark sky. The number wasn't wrong; the alert simply told you only a fraction of the story. Learning to read a Kp forecast — and to spot what it leaves out — is the difference between chasing every false alarm and going out on the nights that count.

What Kp actually measures
The planetary K-index, Kp, is a single number from 0 to 9 that summarises how disturbed Earth's magnetic field has been over a three-hour window. It's built from magnetometer readings at observatories around the world: quiet conditions score low, a strong geomagnetic storm scores high. Roughly, Kp 0–2 is calm, 3–4 is unsettled to active, and 5 and above is officially storm territory (5 is a minor G1 storm; 9 is the top of the scale).
The useful thing about Kp is that it maps to reach: the higher it climbs, the further from the poles the auroral oval expands, and the further south (or north, below the equator) the lights become visible. Why single-number alerts cry wolf
Here's the catch: Kp tells you the aurora might be physically present at your latitude. It says nothing about whether you can actually see it. Three things routinely turn a high-Kp night into a non-event, and none of them appear anywhere in the number.
- Daylight. Kp is a global average over three hours, and the storm doesn't wait for your local night. A Kp 7 that peaks at two in the afternoon is invisible to you — the sky is blue. Half the planet is in daylight during any given storm, yet a naive alert fires for everyone the same way.
- Cloud. The most common reason people miss the aurora isn't weak activity — it's an overcast sky. A brilliant Kp 7 display is completely hidden behind a low deck of stratus, and the Kp number has no idea what your local weather is doing. This is the single biggest gap between "aurora likely" alerts and what people actually see.
- The moon. A bright, high moon floods the sky with light and washes out all but the strongest aurora. A full moon overhead can quietly kill an otherwise promising night — and, again, Kp knows nothing about the lunar phase or whether the moon is even above your horizon.
How a multi-factor verdict differs
The fix isn't a better single number — it's combining several. Instead of shouting a Kp value at everyone, a good forecast checks four independent things for your exact spot: the Kp reach, whether the sky is dark, whether it's clear, and whether the moon is up. The key idea is that these behave like a chain, not an average. The night is only as good as its weakest link: clear skies and a monster Kp are worth nothing if the Sun is up or a full moon is blazing. So when conditions fall short, the honest move is to name the single limiting factor — "limited by daylight", "limited by heavy cloud", "limited by a bright moon" — rather than hiding it behind an optimistic headline.
That's also why our alerts stay quiet when a bare Kp alert would be screaming. If it's the middle of your afternoon, or socked in with cloud, a high Kp simply isn't actionable for you, and pretending otherwise just trains you to ignore the next notification.
Reading the number like a pro
Put it together and Kp becomes a filter, not a verdict. Use it to answer one question — "is the aurora likely to reach my latitude at all?" — and then let darkness, cloud and moonlight decide whether tonight is worth the effort. Learn your own Kp threshold, treat single-number alerts with healthy suspicion, and you'll waste far fewer cold, cloudy evenings staring at an empty sky.
