    A riverside park behind the Arktikum museum, a short walk from the centre. It has an open view north over the Ounasjoki river.

    It is still close to city lights. Do not walk out on the frozen river, because the ice can be thin.

    A forested hill about 200 m high, around 4 km east of the centre, with an observation tower on its western slope. It is one of the most popular aurora spots close to town.

    The trees block parts of the horizon, even from the tower. In winter, reach the tower on the winter walking trail.

  3. Vikaköngäs (Arctic Circle Hiking Area) 26 km · about 22 min by car

    Rapids on the Kemijoki in a state hiking area north of the city, far from street lighting. It has a fire site where you can warm up while you wait.

    It lies off the Sodankylä road (E75). The trailhead is about 200 m from the Vikajärvi bus stop.
