Is the aurora visible in Inverness tonight?
Right now
Maybe — stay ready.
Kp is 2.0. Inverness needs Kp 5+ for the oval overhead — right now it’s low on the northern horizon.
Tonight's peak is forecast around Kp 4.7 (Active). The forecast still depends on darkness, cloud and the moon at your exact spot.
Reliable about 30 minutes ahead — cloud decides the rest.

Come back at 05:46 PM — that’s when the sky goes dark and the aurora could show.

Face north and find a clear, low horizon in that direction. Everything else — dark skies, adapted eyes, the camera trick — is the same anywhere on Earth, so it lives in the how to photograph the aurora guide.

MapNairn East Beach
This Moray Firth beach is easy to reach from Inverness but far enough from its lights. Local guides name the harbour, the promenade and East Beach as the best spots in Nairn.
Walk away from the promenade and harbour lights for a darker sky.
MapFindhorn Beach (Moray coast)
The Moray coast beaches have fairly low light pollution and a clear view north over the firth.
It is the furthest of these spots, so check the cloud forecast before you drive. There are beach car parks at the end of the village.

Local tips
- Sign up for AuroraWatch UK alerts. A yellow alert means aurora may be visible to the naked eye from Scotland, and amber means it is likely.
- Head for the Moray Firth coast east of the city and look north over the water. From Nairn and Findhorn, Inverness's glow is to the south-west, away from where the aurora appears.
- Local guidance gives mid-October to early March as the main viewing season around Nairn.
The last big one
: The aurora lit up the sky over Inverness and the surrounding area on a Monday evening, and many people went outside to photograph it.
